Writing With Light

Food!

I love food. Who doesn't? My favorite thing is going out to eat, or ordering chinese or pizza with good company. Or watching a movie with a bowl full of Cheetos or pita chips. Writing out grocery lists get me excited. I'm about to go to a store that is 95% food! How could I NOT be excited?? Sauteing veggies is a hobby, and making cupcakes or cookies is the best thing to do when procrastinating on schoolwork. And don't even get me started on coffee and tea. It's the highlight of my weekend. I used to be a picky eater, but once I started trying things, the world opened up to me. If I didn't have my fantastic metabolism, I'd be obese. Lately I've been noticing that, even though I love food, I don't really savor it. If I'm hungry, and it's good, it'll be gone in just a few minutes. I want to learn to sit back and really enjoy
what I'm tasting, and look at food as an art.
I recently did my first food photo shoot, which I've heard by many that it can be very tedious and boring. I spent weeks on google and reading through books on how to make food look its best, and it turned out to be a difficult challenge. It was also quite a thrill. I got to get in the action inside the kitchen, as well as photograph the finished product and the interiors of the restaurant. Although the lighting wasn't my best, and it was certainly tedious, there was nothing boring about it. Taking photos of food sounds pretty sweet to me, especially since I was told I could eat whatever I wanted when I was done with each dish. The food was delicious and the employees were incredibly kind to me, I highly recommend the McNinch House Restaurant if you are ever in the Charlotte, NC area. It's expensive, but you will not be disappointed in the food or the service.
Perhaps I'll start photographing some of my meals. Maybe I'll appreciate and savor them more if do. If I end up doing this, I'll post them up. Now all this food talk is making me hungry...
P.S.- Does anyone else find Anthony Bourdain incredibly attractive?

  1. I want to learn more about food photography! I've only done one shoot like this... and i hate to say, the staff I worked with wasn't at all cooperative. Mmm... I wish I was eating here right now.

  2. I'm not a professional photographer (but I did just get a new Nikon D3100 for Christmas!) but I have to say, even if (you thought) the lighting wasn't ideal and the shoot was tedious, your shots don't look that way to me! The shots look fabulous!
